SENSORS FOR ALL-WEATHER OPERATIONS

BK 117 For safe helicopter operations in adverse weather conditions, such as rain, fog or snowfall, Eurocopter plans to evaluate various systems in a BK 117. A Dornier developed imaging laser radar was already integrated. This system is reportedly able to detect cables with a diameter of only 10 mm at distances of 300 meters even in adverse conditions. The HeliRadar, which was recently one of the final nominees for the "German Future Prize" awarded by Germany's President, will be tested later. The radar's antennae are turning together with the rotor (see photo), such generating a synthetic aperture which, in combination with the short wavelength, create an excellent picture resolution which is expected to be in video-quality (70000 picture elements). The radar's field of view of 70 by 40 degrees will be presented on a new cockpit display in a broad 16:9 format.

In-flight, the pilot will be further assisted by a highly precise differential-GPS based navigation system. Also, digital maps giving a perspective view are under evaluation. The focus is on a user-friendly integration of all systems, so as not to increase pilot workload.
