DASA AND DLR PUSH NEW RESEARCH CONCEPTS

by Wolfdietrich Hoeveler

Daimler-Benz Aerospace (Dasa) and the German Aerospace Research Institute (DLR) want to support university graduates in the field of aerospace. DLR will generate 50 additional jobs for this circle in the beginning of 1997. The young graduates are to be employed at the DLR as well as with Dasa in cooperation projects of the two partners, such giving these people a career perspective for the future. In spite of a general reduction of the work force, DLR had already generated 60 additional jobs for university graduates in the past years.

Dasa and DLR are furthermore planning to intensify their cooperation in two leading concepts: satellite navigation and aircraft structures. DM50 million to 60 million will supposedly be generated for these concepts in the next years. The partners are planning to present the concept for a European space-based navigation system which guarantees the independence from the military systems, GPS and GLONASS. According to the managing directors of Dasa and DLR, Dr. Manfred Bischoff and Prof. Walter Kröll, this would require twelve satellites and a ground infrastructure.

Dasa employees estimate the costs for such a system to be around DM2,1 billion plus approximately DM200 million in annual operating costs. Along with a start-off financing by the EU, user fees could cover these costs.

In a second leading concept, both partners are planning to develop new materials and production methods for aircraft structures. The goal is to reduce production and operating costs. The performance of such new materials will also be tested in flight.

Already in 1994, Dasa and DLR agreed on a close cooperation an presented three leading concepts at the beginning of 1996: adaptive wing, adaptive rotor systems, and advanced servicing robot.
