Asian 100seater will be "Airbus-based"
Airbus wird curopäisch/chinesisches 100-Sitzer-Programm führen

Aerospatiale, Alenia and British Aerospace have decided to pursue the 100-seater programme currently under negotiation with Asian partners in an Airbus-based approach, it was announced on December 3. The new aircraft is intended to have commonality with the A320-family and thereby extend the lower end of Airbus' product range below 100 seats.
Furthermore, the AI(R)-partners Aerospatiale, British Aerospace and Alenia intend that Airbus Industrie controls the European contribution to the programme in the areas of programme management, marketing, sales and product support. This approach will involve the setting up of a new company, in which Alenia and Airbus are involved. This way, Dasa re-enters the 100seater programme pursued with China and Singapore.

Additional financial support for Europe's aerospace industry
Zusätzliche Mittel für Europas Luftfahrtindustrie

The European ministers responsible for technology have agreed to spend an additional DM 40 million on basic aerospace research work. This step will support national activities, said Cornelia Yzer, German Undersecretary for technology, in Bonn.
The German government will spend DM 600 million between 1995 and 1998 for basic aerospace research work. German industry will spend the same amount. With this money, work in four lead concepts like Megaliner 2010, Eurojet 2010 (100seater), Helicopter 2010 and Engine 3-E 2010 are being sponsored.

Dr. Bischoff: First positive results of the German aerospace technology programme
Erste positive Ergebnisse des Luftfahrtforschungs- und Technologieprogramms

Dr. Manfred Bischoff, president of the German Aerospace Industry Association (BDLI), sees first positive results of the joint aerospace technology programme in Germany. The competitiveness of participating companies will definitely be strengthened by this unique measure, says Dr. Bischoff. The programme also has positive effects on the job situation in the German aerospace industry.
A survey of the BDLI among member companies showed that equipment and engine manufacturers have created at least 100 new jobs by work in this research programme alone. Overall the programme secures at least 700 jobs in the BDLI member companies. These results, says Dr. Bischoff, also show that Germany is a good industrial base for high technology industry and research work.

Lufthansa Cargo will be logistics service provider
LH Cargo will Logistik-Dienstleister werden

Lufthansa Cargo will be developed into a global logistics provider, managing director Wilhelm Althen has declared. This initiative to further improve the service for the customer will secure the leading position of the company, he said. To satisfy demand for a seamless operation Lufthansa Cargo will offer speedy, guaranteed delivery. High-frequency connections are planned between the main industrial centres worldwide. To this end, strategic alliances with other cargo carriers will be formed or expanded.
Also, Lufthansa Cargo will seek a new working agreement with earthbound cargo haulers. Any company interested in a close cooperation with LH cargo is invited to discuss mutually beneficial deals, Althen said. The new strategy was started during Ocotober in four test markets. Early experiences will be used to refine implementation on a worldwide basis.

Job initiative by Dasa and DLR for young scientists
Neue Stellen für wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs bei Dasa und DLR

The German Aerospace Research Agency DLR and Daimler-Benz Aerospace have agreed to create 50 new jobs for young scientists from 1997 on. The new openings will be available early next year to young universitary graduates. They will work from the beginning in joint teams with Dasa. The young scientists will not stay in DLR alone but also work in Dasa units.
The new jobs will be concentrated in five research areas where Dasa and DLR cooperate very closely together in joint venture programmes: adaptive wing, advanced servicing robot, adaptive rotor, satellite navigation and new aircraft structures.
Professor Walter Kröll and Dasa CEO Dr. Manfred Bischoff emphasized in Bonn that this initiative is another step to create more job opportunities in the German aerospace arena.

Dasa and DLR agree on new reseach ventures
Dasa und DLR vereinbaren zwei neue Leitkonzepte

Dasa and DLR have agreed on two new lead concepts in research that aim at new products and technologies for industry: satellite navigation and aircraft structures. Both are willing to spend DM50 to 60 million in the next years in these two areas.
Main focus of the satellite navigation project is the envisaged European Navigation Satellite System (ENSS). This GPS and GLONASS compatible system is intended to reduce the dependance on the primary military American and Russian systems. ENSS shall be the European part of a worldwide international satellite navigation system.
The second initiative is to develop technologies that reduce cost in production and maintenance of aircraft. Especially composite materials are in the focus of the engineers at DLR and Dasa. Results shall be flight tested.

LITEF/Teldix warns on EF2000 delays
Verzögerung des Eurofighter belastet Litef/Teldix

LITEF managing director Richard Hopman is still convinced that the investment his company has made in Germany will be worthwhile. At the same time, he remains worried over delays in the Eurofighter programme, where LITEF and new sister company Teldix are the main German equipment suppliers. "With the delays and continued uncairtanty regarding production investment, we just have the choice to lay off people quickly or prefinance the work ourselves", he told guests at a reception in Bonn. "With investments in other European countries we should have built a fallback position if Germany pulls out of EF2000".
LITEF (Freiburg) and Teldix (Heidelberg) are resposible for the attack computer, navigation computer, interface processor unit, cockpit interface unit, defensive aids computer and inertial measurement unit of the Eurofighter. The companies are involved in the HUD, computer signal generator, seat sequencer, communications and audio managemnt unit and engine monitoring unit as well.
