Boeing releases Market Forecast
Neue Marktprognosen von Boeing
According to the latest forecast of the world's leading aircraft manufacturer Boeing for the next decade, the world jetliner fleet - driven by 5,5 percent per year growth in airtravel and 6,6 percent in air cargo - is projected to grow from 11500 airplanes at the end of 1996 to nearly 17000 airplanes in 2006. Single-aisle airplanes currently make up 73 percent of the world fleet. By the end of 2006 this percentage is expected to decline to 71 percent as airlines add proportionally more intermediate-size airplanes. The percentage of those airplanes is projected to rise from 19 percent today to 21 percent in 2006. The proportion for large airplanes is expected to decline from 8,4 percent to 7,6 percent over the next decade. The average number of seats is estimated to increase from 197 to 207.
From 2006 to 2016 world air travel is projected to grow at an average of 4,3 percent anually, air cargo growth rates remain at 6,6 percent. The world fleet is projected to reach 23600 airplanes by the end of the twenty-year forecast period. By that time single-aisle airplanes are expected to represent 69,1 percent of the world fleet. The market share of intermediate-size airplanes is projected to increase to 23,5 percent and the proportion of large airplanes is expected to gradually decline to 7,4 percent. The average number of seats is estimated to further increase from 207 seats in 2006 to 219 seats in 2016.
The market value for new commercial jet airplanes over the next ten years is estimated at $ 490 billion. Airplanes the size of the 747 and larger will represent 16 percent of this dollar total, intermediate-size airplanes 41 percent and single-aisle airplanes 43 percent. Single-aisle airplanes also represent the majority of the market in terms of units. Seven out of ten deliveries over the next decade will be single-aisle models. Intermediate-size airplanes, the fastest-growing market segment, will represent two out of ten deliveries. Just one in ten airplanes, says the Boeing forecast, will be equal to or larger in size than the 747.
By 2016 the total market for new commercial jets is projected to have reached $ 1,1 trillion.
To accomodate the growth in traffic and replace capacity lost as airplanes are removed from service, the industry will require 16160 new jets.

Clash on Berlin Tempelhof airport
Streit um Schließungspläne für den Flughafen Berlin Tempelhof
A study conducted by Berlin Brandenburg Flughafen Holding (BBF) which recommends to close Berlin Tempelhof airport as soon as possible has created massive irritation among the Tempelhof serving airlines. Tempelhof airport reported 950000 passengers and a 16 million DM loss for 1996. A spokesman of the Airline Operators Comittee Tempelhof told the press the airport would have to handle 1,5 million passengers in order to become profitable. He revealed a letter from the Lufthansa Board adressed to the Major of Berlin, Eberhard Diedgen. According to the letter, Lufthansa wants Tempelhof to get closed, to transfer scheduled services to Tegel and to concentrate charter services at Schönefeld airport. Russia abandons Progress M-33
Rußland gibt Transportkapsel Progress M-33 auf
Russia's space station Mir is again in trouble. After the recent fire on board the ageing spaceship Progress M-33, a transport capsule, had to be given up after two unsuccessful docking maneuvers. M-33 carried important supplies among them urgently needed gas that is needed to correct the spaceship's orbit. Currently Mir flies 12 km under the limit that is needed for the next docking mission with an American space shuttle in May. To enable the crew to take the necessary corrections Progress M-34 will be launched mid-April.

Rolls-Royce: Results for 1996 announced
Ergebnisse für 1996 bekanntgegeben
Rolls-Royce announced operating profits of 242 million pounds excluding operations to be discontinued, compared to 178 million pounds in 1995. The financial results of the company in 1996 were affected by the decision taken in July to withdraw from the large steam power generation business. After charges of 263 million pounds relating to the businesses to be discontinued (Parsons Power Generation Systems and International Combustion) a loss before tax of 28 million pounds was recorded (1995: Profit before tax: 175 million pounds). Negotiations are continuing towards achieving the sales of both companies.
Record sales of 4 billion pounds were achieved with ongoing businesses increasing by 703 million pounds. Allison accounted for 173 million pounds of the increase. Gross research and development investment increased by 7 percent to 527 million pounds, reflecting increased contributions from shared or funded engineering programs. Net research and development, charged to the profit and loss account, reduced by 7 million pounds to 199 million pounds, reflecting continued good progress on current development programs.
