Competition (Konkurrenz) ATR 42 Ilyushin Il-114 Remarks (Bemerkungen) The An-140 is an all-new regional airliner design intended as a successor to the An-24 family. Its layout is conventional. Operation from unprepared airfields is possible with low-pressure tyres and the APU in the tail. Good hot and high performace is claimed. InterAMI has developed a new interior with anti-noise panels. Production is shared by Antonov, Kharkov and Samara plants. Versions with PW127A engines, and a stretch to 68 seats are possible. Also, a variant with rear loading ramp is considered. History (Geschichte) Antonow started design of a new reginal airliner in 1993. The first An-140 (UK-NTO) was rolled on on 6 June 1997 and flew on 17. September 1997 from Svytoshino airfield in Kiev to Gostomel, for about 1.5 hours. Ukrainian Airlines placed a letter of intent for 40 aircraft. The second flying prototype (UK-NPT) followed on 26 December 1997. At that time, certification was slated for the end of 1998. In November 1998, Antonow concluded negotiations with the Iranian government for the construction of 80 An-140s at the HESA factory in Esfahan. The aircraft would be configured for passenger services on domestic Iranian routes. Cold weather trials were conducted in Arkhangelsk (March May 1999) and in Yakutia (January 2000). As a result of flight tests, the tailplanes got 6 degrees of dihedral and the elevator was changed. By mid-1999, total flight time was around 700 hours in over 600 flights. The first series-production aircraft built at Kharkov flew on 11 October 1999. Certification by the GUS Interstate Aviation Agency was achieved on 25 April 2000, after 1040 test flights. The first Iran-140 made its maiden flight on 7. February 2001. It was produced at the Shakim Shair works in Esfahan from kits supplied by Kharkow. 12 aircraft should be completed by 2004. The first production aircraft was handed over to Odessa Airlines in March 2002. |
