  • fly-by wire control system, a first in subsonic airliners. Built by thomson-CSF/Sfena
  • extensive use of composite materials
  • two-crew cockpit with sidestick controllers
The A320 is the basis for a whole family of airliners, now including A318, A319 and A321. It is competing with the 737 family from Boeing.

History (Geschichte)
The Airbus A320 programme was launched on 23 March 1984.
Four aircraft were involved in the flight test programme. The first made its maiden flight on 22 February 1987 from Toulouse.
Certification of the A320-100 was achieved on 26 February 1988. Deliveries commenced on 28 March 1988, to Air France. British Airways followed on 31 March.
The A320-200, which is now the standard version, was certified on on 8 November 1988. The US FAA approved both variants on 15 December 1988.
The V2500 powerplant option was first flight tested on 28 July 1988, and this engine was aproved on the A320 on 20 April 1989. Deliveries began in May 1989 to Adria Airways.
The 500th A320 was handed over on 20 January 1995, to United Airlines.
