Remarks (Bemerkungen)
After a break of more than a decade, Cessna is re-entering the piston-single market with both the 172R Skyhawk and the 182S Skylane. The Skylane was last built in 1986, reaching a total production run of 19812 examples (plus 2102 Skylane RGs with retractable gear).
Th new 172S programme began in 1995/96, when three pre-production aircraft were completed at Wichita. First of those flew on 16 July 1996, with production test pilot Lionel Diamond at the controls. FAA certification to Part 23 was achieved on 3. October 1996 after 164 hours.
New production started at the Independence factory in the autumn of 1996, and the first 182S was handed over to the US AOPA on 24 April 1997.
