Remarks (Bemerkungen)
The Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) was derived from the Canadair Challenger business jet. It was the first new-generation 50-seat jetliner to enter service.
Several Bombardier Aerospace operations are involved in the CRJ programme. Candair is responsible for the design, manufacturing, assembly, aircraft testing and certification. The centre-section fuselage, wing flaps, ailerons, spoilerons and inbord spoilers are designed and manufactured by Short Brothers at Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Different variants of the CRJ are offered:
  • Series 100: The original standard aircraft, as at first certified (see photo)
  • Series 100ER: extended range option, now replaced by Series 200ER
  • Series 100LR: still more range (see photo). Now replaced by Series 200LR
  • Series 200: Improved model, featuring CF34-3B1 engines with better fuel consumption, better initial cruise altitude, more speed and range.
  • Series 200ER: extended range with higher take-off weight
  • Series 200LR: another increase in take-off weight for still more range

History (Geschichte)
Design studies on the Canadair Regional Jet airliner began in the third quarter of 1987, with a basic configuration achieved by June 1988. The programme was officially launched on 31. March 1989. In September 1990, the 100ER-version (extended range) was announced.
Rollout took place on 6 May 1991. Three aircraft were involved in a 1400 hour flight test programme, mostly conducted at Wichita (Kansas). The flew as follows:
  • 7001 (C-FCRJ): 10 May 1991
  • 7002 (C-FNRJ): 2 August 1991
  • 7003: 17 November 1991
Transport Canada type approval was awarded on 31 July 1992, followed on 15 January 1993 by European JAA certification, and on 21 January 1993 by the US FAA.
The first CRJ was handed of to Lufthansa CityLine on 29 October 1992 and entered revenue service in November.
In March 1994, the Series 100LR was announced, with Lauda Air as launch customer. Certification was on 29 April 1994.
The Series 200 with CF34-3B1 engines instead of the -3A1s was announced in 1995. First delivery was to Tyrolean Airways on 15 January 1996.
The 200th production aircraft was delivered to Lufthansa CityLine on 24 October 1997.
