It is difficult to track down exact numbers delivered to the various customers, but the MiG-29 has been used by the following air forces:
Competitors (Konkurrenz) Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon Boeing F-18C/D Hornet Dassault Mirage 2000 Remarks (Bemerkungen) Development of the MiG-29 began in the early 70s, and the first of 14 prototypes made its maiden flight on 6 October 1977. Production began in 1982, with the first deliveries to the USSR frontal aviation units in 1983. The aircraft was widely exported until the collape of the USSR in the early 90s brought production at the MAPO factory in Moscow and the Sokol plant in Gorki (Nizhni Novgorod) to a halt in 1992. Since then MIG MAPO is trying to sell remaining stocks and upgrades like the MIG-29SMT. A fully revised MiG-29M was developed in the mid-80s, but that programme seems to be in abeyance for now as funds have dried up.
