FLUG REVUE READERS VOTE FOR PREFERRED AIRLINES AND AIRPORTS

By Adel Krämer

FLUG-REVUE readers voted the German Lufthansa the best airline for flights within Europe and across the Atlantic. That is not surprising, because Lufthansa is not only Germany's biggest airline but also an advertisement for the nation. In the category for charter flights the LH daughter Condor won hands down. Lauda Air was awarded quite unexpectedly third place for inner European flights. The Swiss obviously cannot keep up, because our readers relegated Swissair into fourth place. Singapore Airlines clearly took the first place for flights to and from Asia, followed by Lufthansa and Hong Kong's home carrier Cathay Pacific. After all three members of Star Alliance and only one member of Oneworld took the first four ranks. Ansett Australia (also a member of Star) is beaten and at the bottom of the league is Sabena, which is partly Swiss owned and which will be sold completely by the Belgium Government.

As far as airports are concerned Germany's "mega" airport Frankfurt (expectedly?) takes the lead, closely followed by the Bavarian hub Munich. FLUG-REVUE readers don't seem to be scared of big airports. Köln/Bonn takes the third place. Surprisingly the three Berlin airports are more than half way down the popularity scale. Even regional airports like Münster/Osnabrück are more preferred by our readers than the Berlin ones.

Airbus Industry also received a clear vote from the FLUG REVUE readers. The American manufacturer Boeing is lagging far behind the European aircraft construction. In the category short/medium distance jets the A320 family seized the first place in front of the Boeing 737 Next Generation, while passengers obviously prefer the A430 to the Boeing 747. The A310 and the Dornier 328JET are on third and fourth place in the category short/medium haul jets. This looks like a clear decision for Europe. The vote against Boeing cannot be blamed on the fact that the brand is not well known.

Detailed tables of the readers preferences can be found in the printed issue!
