SUCCESS FOR ILA 2006 IN BERLIN

By Volker K. Thomalla

ILA 2006 ended with record results: Despite the fact that the show has been shortened by one day compared to ILA 2004, there were more visitors than before. Over 250000 visitors (2004: 201500) went through the entrance gates at Berlin-Schönefeld Airport between May 16 and 21. There were 115000 trade visitors. They saw a ILA with superlatives: 1014 exhibitors (2004: 987) from 42 countries showed their products and services. The Airbus A380 was the star of the show and attracted a big portion of the public crowd. The huge aircraft flew every day and showed a Lufthansa-logo on the fuselage for the last day of ILA.

But even without the A380 the ILA could have been namend a show of firsts. For the first time, the MiG-29 OVT with thrust vectoring nozzles was shown outside Russia. This aircraft surprised the masses by its manoeverability. And the replica of the Messerschmitt Me 262, which was shown for the first time at an airshow, was worth attending the event. The aircraft is owned by the Messerschmitt foundation and flew from Manching to Berlin.

Another newcomer was the Grob SPn, a utility jet from Grob Aerospace of Mindelheim in southern Germany. The jet is being produced out of composites and had flown for the first time on July 20, 2005. It has accumulated over 170 flight hours. A second prototype is scheduled to fly soon.

But not only the public, bt the trade visitors alike were satisfied with ILA 2006. The conferences were well attended and the exhibitors welcomed a lot of high ranking delegations and visitors to their stands and chelets. The German government was also supportive: Visiting the ILA were the ministers Michael Glos, Thomas de Maizière, Wolfgang Schäuble, Franz Josef Jung and Wolfgang Tiefensee. FLUG REVUE has asked many exhibitors and they stated: ILA 2006 was the best ILA ever. ILA 2008 is scheduled from May 27 to June 1. It shall take place in Berlin-Schönefeld again while at that time the new Berlin Brandenburg International airport is being built.
