Customers (Kunden)
By the time of the first flight, there were three customers for the 757-300:
  • Condor: 13 firm (launch customer in September 1996)
  • Icelandair: 2 firm plus options on a further 8 (announced June 16, 1997)
  • Arkia Israeli Airlines: 2 firm plus 2 options (announced 31 July 1998, for delivery in the first quarter of 2000)
International Lease Finance can change six of its 757 orders to the -300, which is also possible for Air Transport of Taiwan (five). Total 757 sales stood at 915 by 31. December 1997.

Remarks (Bemerkungen)
The 757-300 is a stretched derivative of the basic 757-200. According to the manufacturer, it offers
  • 20 per cent increse in revenue passengers
  • 48 per cent increase in available cargo volume
  • lowest seat-mile cost in 250 seat market. Technically, the principal changes relative to the 757-200 are
  • stretched fuselage, with 4,06 m plug in front of and 3,04 m plug behind the wings
  • strengthened after body section and tail skid
  • strengthened wings, gear
  • systems revisions for the longer cabin, new interior and vacuum lavatories.
After verifying the market potential of a stretched 757, Boeing launched the -300 programme on September 2, 1996 with an order from Condor. Announcement was at the Farnborough Air Show. On November 15, the engineers reached a firm design configuration. Major assembly got under way in September 1997 at Renton, with the first fuselage in assembly by November. Final assembly started on March 15, 1998, and the Rolls-Royce engines are installed on May 4.
The first 757-300 rolled-out at the Renton plant on May 31, 1998. It took off on August 2 at 10.08 am, with Leon Robert and Jerry Whites at the controls. During the 2 hour 25 minute flight, they conducted a series of tests on the systems and structures before landing at Boeing Field in Seattle. "It flies like a 757-200", Robert said.
The 757-300 programme must pack more flight-test hours into a shorter amount of time than any other major Boeing airplane derivative in recent times. Around 725 hours are planned by three aircraft before type-certification, which is targeted for December, just 27 months after firm configuration. Launch customer Condor then is to receive its first aircraft in January 1999.
