Competitors (Konkurrenz)
Fiat G.91 in NATO lightweight combat aircraft competition / Dassault Mystère IV for Armée de l'Air service

Remarks (Bemerkungen)
The SE 5000 was designed by Polish aircraft designer John Jakimiuk to operate from unprepared fields, even soft grounds and beaches. To achieve this, the Baroudeur featured three retractable skids instead of a conventional landing gear. For take-off the aircraft the ground crew mounted it on a trolley that was jettisoned after the jet became airborne. Though the concept worked successfully, the Baroudeur was soon superseded by more capable aircraft like the Dassault Etendard. After the SE 5000 had lost the NATO competion for a leightweight combat aircraft to the conventional Fiat G.91, the program was terminated.
